Background of the study
Narrative forms in Nigeria reveal significant syntactic variation between traditional folktales and modern digital blogs. Traditional narratives, deeply rooted in oral culture, often feature elaborate sentence structures, repetition, and parallelism that serve mnemonic and didactic functions (Okafor, 2023). In contrast, modern blogs adopt a more streamlined and conversational syntax to cater to the immediacy of digital communication. This comparative study examines how syntactic structures evolve from oral traditions to contemporary online narratives. By analyzing texts from folktales and blogs, the research investigates differences in sentence complexity, clause integration, and rhetorical devices. The study situates these syntactic differences within the broader context of cultural transformation and technological change, demonstrating how narrative styles adapt to new media environments while retaining elements of traditional expression (Ibrahim, 2024; Balogun, 2025). This analysis contributes to our understanding of language evolution in response to changing communication platforms and highlights the interplay between tradition and modernity in narrative construction.
Statement of the problem
Despite the rich legacy of Nigerian folktales and the rapid growth of digital blogs, there is a lack of comparative research on the syntactic structures that define these narrative forms. Traditional narratives and modern blogs employ markedly different syntactic patterns, yet the implications of these differences for cultural transmission and reader engagement remain underexplored (Okafor, 2023). The absence of systematic analysis hinders the development of comprehensive models for understanding narrative evolution in Nigeria. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the syntactic features of both folktales and blogs, providing insights into how narrative conventions adapt to changing communicative contexts (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
1. To compare syntactic structures in traditional folktales and modern blogs.
2. To analyze the influence of media on narrative syntax.
3. To propose theoretical frameworks for narrative evolution.
Research questions:
1. What are the key syntactic differences between folktales and blogs?
2. How does media influence narrative structure?
3. What do these differences imply for cultural transmission?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of narrative syntax, bridging the gap between traditional and modern storytelling. The insights will inform scholars in linguistics, cultural studies, and digital media by elucidating how narrative forms evolve and adapt, thereby enriching our understanding of cultural continuity and innovation (Balogun, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study focuses exclusively on syntactic analysis in Nigerian folktales and blogs. It does not consider other narrative genres or media forms.
Definitions of terms:
1. Syntax: The rules governing sentence structure in language.
2. Folktales: Traditional oral narratives that convey cultural values.
3. Blogs: Online platforms featuring informal, narrative-based writing.
